Anything but green

My photo. See what I mean?

Look, I know I should be grateful

For the lush dampness of Cornwall;

The green everywhere relieved by

Purple toadflax here and there, cheerful

California poppies on peoples’ patios,

Pink and white valerian growing out of walls,

But mostly it’s green, eye-popping green,

Green green green…

True, lots of varieties of the colour green;

Every plant scarfing up light,

Eating sunshine as fast as it can,

The accidental meeting and fusing,

Two billion years ago

Of an alga and a cell;

The alchemical making of oxygen

For us to breathe…

So I should be proud and joyful

That the grass is green,

Not yellow with drought;

Not endless asphalt and pavement;

I should enjoy the relentless

Greenness of everything,

But right now

I’m bored of it.
