Armed Angels
25. Another one some time in June 2021
When you go into a Baroque church –
In Hungary say, where churches
Start with Baroque, not Roman or Gothic,
Because of the Turks
Demolishing all earlier churches
For being Christian –
You will find plenty of saints holding things
To show how they died, if martyrs,
Or sometimes what they did.
Saint Florian, for instance,
Often holds a burning house
Because he put out a burning house in Roman times
And is the patron saint of firemen.

The other thing you will see are a lot
Of heavily-armed angels rioting
All over the church in a very disorderly way:
With spears, swords, bows and arrows — few clubs.
So many tools of death.
And I look at them and wonder why?
What if they were holding
Assault rifles, pistols, rocket launchers?
What then? Do American churches
Have skirmishing angels with M16s?
Aren’t angels peaceful spiritual beings?
Why are they so heavily armed?

I still wonder about this: could an angel drive a tank?
