Despair

I know this was faked because live lobsters aren’t red but blue, thanks to their copper-based blood.

Faced with global heating, despair is an easy option.

We panic and go numb. Millions of us still don’t believe in it.

As if it were a nasty new religion of blood and fire.

We sate our fear with shopping online;

We fight our fear by exercising;

We argue endlessly: should we do this

Which seems pretty pointless and also inconvenient?

Or that, which is also inadequate and pointless?

Or another thing which is greenwashed.

Deserts are spreading. California is drying and burning.

There are no swallows in the skies

This year or probably next or ever?

The oceans are overwhelmed with plastic and dead spots;

War is bursting out in places with droughts;

Politicians are becoming tyrants and tyrants, lunatics.

*

We are arguing and shopping and eating our way

Closer and closer to a cliff-edge which we may have

Already gone over.

Will it be death for all or only non-billionaires?
