Our space technology — slime mould fruiting bodies.

Don’t panic! Don’t panic!

Our Lady Earth isn’t trying to kill us — yet.

You might say She has every reason to: that we’re a massive overgrowth like a cancer; that we’re eating her up and destroying her forests and oceans in a mad dash for capital; that we deserve to be wiped out and all our works become crumbling ruins in the new jungles.

Maybe a few of us will be left: hunter-gatherer tribes, wandering on foot among the castles built by giants, probably worshipping little oblong metal things with one smooth black side. And probably a lot happier and more relaxed than we are, only anxious about real problems like wild dog packs and starvation.

That could happen, yes. It’s possible. If we let global climate change rip, the chances of it happening will get higher and higher.

But I don’t think so. Not yet. She’s put a lot of care and work into evolving us, and even more into trying to keep the atmosphere from going haywire as we keep on pumping more and more carbon dioxide into it.
