Good article. Net zero to me is a state where no CO2 or methane is being dumped in the atmosphere by whatever it is you're doing.

Net zero does not mean pumping out gigatonnes of CO2 and methane and sucking it back again by using forests and carbon sequestration. That's because forests are too slow to cope with the amount of CO2 etc we're all emitting and carbon sequestration CAN'T DO IT AT SCALE YET. Maybe one day, twenty years from now, carbon sequestration will work at a high enough rate of efficiency but AT THE MOMENT it can't. Sorry. It's sort of like fusion really.

In other words, people who think that carbon sequestration will do that magic are living in cloud cuckoo land.

We have to stop burning fossil fuels. That's it. The rest of it - biodiversity, cleaning rivers, replanting coral, insulation etc etc - is all very nice and may well help but the fact is, if we keep on burning fossil fuels - which we are burning at an increasing rate all the time because it's inextricably woven into our economy - we will die.

Business as usual is suicidal.
