I have to confess I hadn't even heard of the Roll Call and watched it from your link, Umair. I'm not even an American (although I was married to one for 21 years). I'm British.

And annoyingly, I still found myself in tears, watching the Roll Call. Why? Firstly because it's a brilliant celebration of the real America - diverse, decent, sturdy, unbowed. Second because it's also the best possible riposte to Trump's ugly divisiveness. And thirdly because it's the first time I've felt that Joe Biden has any chance of beating Trump.

It was - and will remain - a beautiful moment in an ugly and dangerous election.
