Jaj istenem, Umair. I hate it that you're probably right again. (My mother was a Hungarian political refugee in the 1950s. The last time she voted, she voted UKIP.)

I hate it that Trumpism will probably transform, find a new more intelligent and braver leader, and become the real terrorists they've always wanted to be.

I hate it that this is happening in the USA, a country I've always admired. I married an American, after all.

However I take some comfort from history. This is far from the first time this kind of thing has happened. Yes, it's bad news that 25% of voters in the USA think the Trumpist attempted coup at the Capitol was a fine thing and some kind of victory.

However there are things that militate against Trumpism turning into the White Taliban.

Firstly, Trump is stupid and cowardly. To be a leader of a successful terrorist group you need at the very least to have some brain and some bravery.

Once they get rid of Trump and find another holy leader, that will be a problem.

Secondly, his followers are utterly confused and trapped in the toxic fantasies of QAnon or even just white supremacy itself. This makes them more dangerous at the moment - see Wednesday - but it also makes them vulnerable to reality breaking into their fantasy. Reality will do that eventually; if covid doesn't work, Reality will try Trump repudiating QAnon and blaming it for his troubles.

Once that's happened, they'll peel off fast.

Thirdly, most Americans are not healthy - 80% of them are overweight or obese; many have comorbidities like diabetes or heart disease. Btw that's why the deathrate in the USA has been so bad. Covid loves obesity and diabetes.

At the Capitol on Wednesday, one of the five casualties had a stroke and another one had a heart attack.

Their unhealthiness will limit what they can do physically.

These are not guarantees - but at least they give Democracy the chance to hit back.
