Lifecycle of the paperclip (Bentus wirei)

206.

The lifecycle of the paperclip used to be simple.

Although we have never definitively found the pupa

(Or chrysalis), the larval form has been observed

In most offices, shops and homes. We think it eats dust.

But what we have always assumed is the imago

(The wire coat-hanger) is now under doubt.

True, mating has been observed in wardrobes

With hangers collecting together like frogs,

But where, we ask, are the eggs?

If coat-hangers lay eggs, where are they?

No, we don’t think live births are very likely.

Also we think there must be limited metamorphosis,

But because of the topological symmetry

Of the two body plans, foolish and incontinent revolutionaries

Are suggesting that paperclips simply grow

(in out of the way places like under sofas)

Until they are coat-hangers.

In order to scotch this silly idea,

We will continue to search for the chrysalis

To observe what comes out. However, regrettably,

The species of wire coat-hanger is now officially endangered,

Owing to habitat loss to the plastic hanger, which

Crowds out native species. If we’re not careful,

The mystery may never be solved!
