Little Pearls

I was swimming in a grey sea under a grey sky

And it was raining as well which meant

That the water felt warmer than the air,

Full of fine drops and the occasional gull

Showing off.

*

And I noticed tiny seed pearls on the surface

Of the water, minute silvery bubbles

Lasting mysteriously too long for seconds

Before they popped and disappeared.

*

I don’t think they were air bubbles,

They looked too solid, the sea was calm, no foam.

Maybe they were raindrops landing on the salt sea

Water, their different surface tensions wrestling

So they lasted longer before they melted.

*

And as I got out a beautiful young man

Arrived to swim and we agreed that we were addicted

And he stood on the wall and dived in.
