Sonnet of the Lady

My heart is stabbed three times a day

When I read bad news about the birds,

About animals and fish, when people say

“The last rhinoceros” those sad words

Dissolve and new bad news comes:

Of fossil fuel firms’ many lies,

Consumers consuming. Alas the sums

Do not add up, no matter what one tries

To make it neat. The Earth is consumed

By greedy apes so clever at strife.

She’s not infinite as the economists assume,

She’s a ball of rock with a thin scrape of life.

A tough bubble of air. Our fragile towers

Will fall and crumble into beds of flowers.

This isn’t my first attempt at a sonnet but I think it’s still pretty Terrible. Never mind. Practice makes perfect.
