A friend of mine pointed out a rather large hole in my argument (for the second time).

What he said was this:

“Actually, as I mentioned, there’s nothing we (first worlders) can do about global warming, because China and India are doing most of the new CO2.

And they’re not going to listen to us.

So… we really are utterly helpless.”

Firstly, is that true?

Well, in 2023, top of the chart, China’s CO2 emissions were 11.9 billion metric tonnes.

The USA was number two with 4.8 billion tonnes in 2023.

India came putative third with 2.7 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2022.

So… yes. Yes that is true.

Is it true China, the USA and India aren’t going to listen to us?

I suspect they won’t. Why should they? We’re not top dog anymore for a start and it’s clear that China and the USA under Trump will be conducting a contest on who can burn the most fossil fuels the most wastefully. I’m betting on China, by the way.

Who knows? In four years, Americans, Republican and Democrat, might have turned their whole country renewable and taken the USA off the chart of carbon offenders.
