You know, everybody thinks that people were deliberately dirty in the Middle Ages. Now while they weren't as fragrant as we are, cleanliness was seen as an upper class thing so most people did their best to keep clean. There were public baths called "stews" in most towns.

It wasn't really like Monty Python, you know. Monty Python is supposed to be funny.

Try reading Ruth Goodman's wonderful book "Domestic Revolution" for a real clue to who was dirty and why. Or any of her books, really.
